behind the scenes @ sleepless summer

Yesterday we shot a summer-themed fashion editorial for the launch of Australian produced X & Y Magazine (www.xandymagazine.com.au). A very early morning start (well, 5am – that’s early compared to my usual midday wake up) followed by a two hour drive from our apartment on Flinders St in the Melbourne CBD to Blairgowie, near Portsea (read: “The western most settlement on Victoria ’s scenic Mornington Peninsula”) and as if the early morning start didn’t suck enough – we didn’t even get to shoot much in the morning. Most of the magic happened around 1.30pm – 2pm, when the sun made love to the models’ faces in orgasmic rays of light and quivering displays of shadow. The photo above is of one of our favourite models, the beautiful Julia Ikonomou (on the right) and my lover, Nirrimi (on the left), both asleep in the car on the way home after the shoot. This was around 6pm. Biiiiig day. Being a black and white photo you can’t really tell, but we were all pretty badly sunburnt. Spending a day in the sun (and at one point, being shirtless – shorts stayed on, no Terry Richardson here) really made me feel like summer is finally on it’s way, and I seriously can’t wait. Beach + cocktails + Bali + my lover = one helluva summer. You’ll be able to see the actual editorial around the 10th November in all it’s summery goodness at the X & Y Magazine website, www.xandymagazine.com.au

the comfort of home is a burrowing thing

lately i’ve been doing it for the money, and not for the love. my lover nirrimi and i have so many expenses, it’s terrible. sydney next month, and back to melbourne a week later, then over to perth, then to bali for a month, then back to perth, and from there to… who knows where. and paying rent for our apartment all the while. we might be moving to sydney next year, which would be absolutely wonderful. sydney is where my daughter is, and where my lover was born. i moved to melbourne earlier this year because my hometown of perth just didn’t feel… right. melbourne has become the same. it’s almost as if my wanderlust is a continuous source of discontent. ying and yang: it isn’t fair that i will always feel frustrated, but it is brilliant that i will see the world – and there will always be a little white fuzzy cloud of happiness laced with discontent present while doing so. sydney should be good. we’re returning back to the soil, the source of our conception, that red red dirt and washy white-blue sea. time to start afresh.
thailand & some of singapore, too
well, here they are. finally! moments from krabi. there are also a few frames from our short stopover in singapore, where we stayed with my uncle, auntie and cousins for a few days on the way to thailand, and a few days on our way back from thailand. i know i said before that i’d be posting two parts – a colour post and a monochrome post – but after going through the photos there weren’t many that i liked in colour, bar one or two (which i’ve included in this post), so apologies for that. i’ve made some pretty lovely colour processing though, so i’ll have to head into the city or book a wedding (hint, hint) to try that out and show you all. anyway! enough chit-chat. here, photos:

krabi, thailand
i’ll be posting a whole heap of photos from a trip to krabi, thailand. i’m thinking of doing this in two parts: colour, and black and white. i’ve been experimenting with my colour and black and white processing of images…i’d love to know what you guys think about them. keep an eye out on my blog for the posts! here’s a sneaky peeky:

bali (again)
i’m inspired to travel again. a man you all need to know (and who you all will know one day) – bryn donkersloot, has once again inspired me with his endless tales of foreign wonder and intrigue. bryn got into the wanderlusting photojournalism gig last year (correct me if i’m wrong) after watching the james nachtwey documentary, ‘war photographer’. a few months later and he was on his way to israel to document the misery and violence caused by conflict. a 19 (or 20, i suck at this) year old australian, taking photos by himself amidst flying bullets and gas in gaza. crazy, i know. at the moment bryn is in bangkok (though he might be back now – hey, i told you i suck at this thing), again on his lonesome, staying in a tiny hotel room on a concrete bed with a pillow you could “bludgeon someone to death with”. he’s been documenting the red light district of bangkok, getting ripped off by sex club owners, and basically just doing a lot of the things i really, really wish i could be doing right now. i just wish i could find a job so i could save more efficiently! seriously, i am the worst at this sort of thing. pre-recession, when it was easy to find and procure a job, i didn’t want one. now during the recession, when finding a job is like finding $20 in your wallet when you don’t even have a job to start with, and of course – i want a job. so if anybody in melbourne knows of any employment opportunities (and no, i will not pick up that $20 you just dropped)…let me know!
anyway, below is a link to bryn’s blog and a few more images from my trip to bali (where nirrimi and i will be staying for a whole month this december!! can’t wait). always love to hear your thoughts (and employment opportunities, so it seems). – m

melbourne zoo
spent a day at melbourne zoo with my beautiful little girl lily and her mum, courtney, while they were here visiting from sydney. i was so tired by the end of it – lily, the lucky little thing, fell asleep in her pram half-way through the day and left courtney and i to push her, a chubby little (sleeping, and hence dead-weighted) bubby around. melbourne zoo, why must you have so many hills!
